ON THE JOB: DRESSMAKER
DRESSMAKER:
JENNY LEA GOMES DA COSTA
I was born in Christchurch but spent most of my childhood in the Marlborough Sounds; swimming in the sea, horse riding, and generally running around with no shoes on. From an early age, I loved all things sewing and crafty, and would steal sheets from the linen cupboard to make my creations from.
I met Ricardo while he was travelling around New Zealand. We spent twelve years living in the UK and travelling around the world together, including an overland trip driving from London to Cape Town.
We got married in 2010 in Cape Town, Ricardo’s hometown, and had a cheetah called Phoenix at our wedding. My wedding dress was my own creation.
While living in London, I kept designing and sewing, making wedding dresses and evening dresses for friends and clients. When I moved back to Christchurch five years ago, I continued making my creations part-time while working in a full-time office job. I finally took the plunge three years ago and left my job, to pursue my passion – due to an amazing opportunity to work alongside the lovely ladies at Wilkins Bridal. I specialised in women’s tailoring and wedding dress alterations.
This year, along with Wilkins Bridal, I moved into beautiful new premises, with an intimate boutique feeling. I am looking forward to welcoming clients to this lovely space.
Also, this month I will be launching my first collection of bridesmaid dresses, they have been designed with luxury and romance in mind and are made to be worn again and again, using locally sourced fabrics where possible to minimise waste and ensure a high standard of quality.
I am excited for what the future holds and look forward to welcoming clients and making them beautiful garments that meet their individual style.
