What began this event?
“Racism has always been a prevalent issue in Ōtautahi and Aotearoa as a colonised country. For this campaign we are focusing on Ōtautahi and its history to inform this city and spread to a wider Aotearoa. The last straw for us as The Conscious Club was when our friend was racially attacked in the city centre after a skateboarding event, where five males attacked him while calling him racial slurs.
“This attack was during a huge civil rights movement and after the terrorist attacks here in Christchurch. We were left scared and hurt for our friend and asking ourselves how are people still so blind to racism?
“We shared our story online hoping to unite and engage with Aotearoa, and we were shown a lot of support from our community, and people shared stories of similar incidents happening to them here in Ōtautahi.
From there, we decided to direct a campaign focused around the issue that is still very much alive in Christchurch.
