Unwind in the wilds of Dunedin

Looking to explore the roads less travelled for your summer getaway this year? Cruise down stunning coastal highways and through tussock-lined roads to boutique hinterland hideaways and seaside sanctuaries. Ideal for families or couples, Dunedin city and its picturesque outer hamlets are perfect escapes away from overcrowded holiday hotspots.

SEASIDE ESCAPE

The drive down the north coast into the Dunedin boundary is spectacular. Charming settlements frame the bays and inlets. On a summer’s day, the sheltered lagoon, white sand beaches, and relaxed vibe of Karitāne make it feel like a tropical getaway. Channelling barefoot luxe, the beautifully appointed Longhouse commands panoramic ocean views and is the perfect retreat for friends and family. Nearby is the spectacular historic Huriawa Pā site, which can be toured by walking, cycling, and waka.

HEAD FOR THE HILLS

Head slightly inland from the coast and take a backroad adventure into the Waikouaiti hills to a hinterland haven. Nestled amongst rocks and tussock, overlooking a valley, is Fallow Ridge Retreat. A luxurious two-person stay with an outdoor bath and rugged rural views. To fully immerse yourself in nature, take a short drive to the amazing Orokonui Ecosanctuary, a genuine cloud forest populated with native birdlife and New Zealand’s tallest tree. Head there via Arc Brewery, which makes a tasty selection of craft beer.

PENINSULA PARADISE

Home to albatross, sea lions, and penguins, the Otago Peninsula also hosts scenic wonders like the Okia Reserve pyramids, Victory Beach shipwreck, and night skies ideal for stargazing tours. Head up the spine of the peninsula past the iconic castle and over to Sandymount, where there are amazing beaches and a gin distillery which will soon open for tastings, before spending a couple of nights at the waterside oasis of Kaimata Retreat.

CITY SAFARI

You can pedal your way from the peninsula around the harbour on the nearly complete shared path, which takes you past quaint inlets and colourful boatsheds to the city. Enjoy a seafood lunch at the waterfront at Harbourside Grill or Plato’s selection of pan-fried fish for dinner. Explore the colourful canvasses of the city with a Dunedin Street Art walk and hunt out the veritable jungle of murals depicting all manner of creatures, from kākāpō and Haast eagles to wolves and bulls.
