Migrating south
From the sun-soaked shores of Waiheke Island to the dramatic peaks of Marlborough and Bannockburn, Swiftsure is a bold new collection from the makers of Man O’ War.
Waiheke Island’s unique conditions have long shaped the distinctive character of Man O’ War wines. Now, the Man O’ War team have set their sights on the distinct landscapes in the South. With family-owned vineyards planted on sub-alpine hillsides and rocky river terraces in Marlborough and Bannockburn, Swiftsure Vineyards draws inspiration from the ruggedly beautiful South Island.
For winemaker Duncan McTavish, the expansion feels like a natural evolution and the perfect contrast to the Man O’ War collection. No stranger to challenging conditions, he is excited about the possibilities to come with the new South Island offering. A vision shared by viticulturist Sam Taylor, who has embraced the venture south wholeheartedly, relocating with his family from Waiheke Island to lead the vineyard operations in the iconic Marlborough region, while continuing to keep a guiding eye over Man O’ War.
For those who chase adventure and embrace epic journeys, Swiftsure offers a gateway to awe-inspiring Southern landscapes. Their wines, crafted with purity and power, embody the same ethos as Man O’ War, producing bold and expressive styles that are a true reflection of their place.
Swiftsure Vineyards will be making their South Island debut at the South Island Wine and Food Festival on 7 December. They’ll be sampling their vibrant Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, featuring notes of tropical fruits, crisp citrus, punchy jalapeno, and fresh herbs – showcasing the intensity that has made Marlborough famous. In addition, they will introduce their Bannockburn Single Vineyard Pinot Noir, hand-picked and bursting with a powerful aromatic profile of boysenberry, rhubarb, cherry blossom, and smoky undertones, with a unique umami finish.
Just as Man O’ War’s Restaurant and Tasting Room has become a renowned escape on Waiheke Island, Swiftsure plans to create its own haven in the South. A vibrant new restaurant is scheduled to open in Arrowtown early next year, bringing the spirit of Swiftsure to life.
