The inaugural Christchurch Town Hall Gala Ball is proudly hosted by Venues Ōtautahi and marks 50 years since opening its doors to the public in September 1972. And best of all, you’re invited!

Matilda somersaults into town

Roald Dahl fever will soon hit the city, with Showbiz Christchurch’s production of Matilda – The Musical somersaulting into the Isaac Theatre Royal on 16 September. We're back!

Who would have thought that winter would bring with it a packed season of cultural wonders? I’ve written many times in my editorial about events being on hiatus or jinxing myself with ‘we’re back!’, but I write this with my fingers and toes crossed as it finally seems like we are reclaiming the stage!

The background

I’ve always enjoyed dressing up – a penchant for it, you might say. I was a drama kid, and before that would dive deep into the family dress-up box, in our case, an old leather suitcase with generations of costumes inside, some requiring abstract thinking to bring a character to life.

Fish and Floyd

This month’s theme focuses on ‘eating and exploring’ – two of my favourite things. When I think of times when these have been combined with my cultural loves, one adventure stands out. It was 2019, and I was in ‘San Francisco of the South’, Invercargill, for the Pink Floyd Experience’s rendition of The Wall.

After school viewing

I recently discussed with a friend the television shows that have shaped us. One that we mutually agreed on was Whose Line is it Anyway. Ritualistically, I would watch it each afternoon upon my return from high school, having picked up a milkshake from the local dairy and microwaved far too many two-minute noodles.

IT'S UP TO US

In my last editorial, I described 2022 as a ‘year of culture’ with the hopes that artists and creatives would take back to the stages, microphones, and soapboxes throughout the city. I certainly didn’t predict that our country would be in the red two days after sending our February issue to print.

SUMMER IN THE CITY

If you have the opportunity, support our creative community this summer. How can you do this? I’m glad you asked. Go to outdoor theatre, buy a print or a sculpture, sit in the comfort of the cinema, and tip a busker.

 RESPECT THE EXPERIENCE

Neil Lambert remembers the excitement of cinema gone by. Theatrics like a tipped over Jeep in the foyer of the Moorhouse cinema complex for the premiere of Jurassic Park are things you just don’t see anymore. For Neil, going to the movies should be an experience worth leaving home for.
